Nassau County Correctional Center has a dismal record when it comes to ensuring the safety and respecting the rights of those incarcerated within its walls. Unfortunately, Nassau County elected officials have an equally dismal track record when it comes to ensuring competent and effective oversight of NCCC.

Join us Wednesday, September 13 at 12 PM on the steps of the Legislative Building as we announce the formation of Nassau County Jail Advocates, a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to advocating on behalf of those incarcerated in Nassau County.

Following the 12 PM press conference, there will be a legislative Rules Committee meeting at 1 PM. We aim to pack the meeting with as many supporters as possible to demonstrate our solidarity with the individuals and families whose lives have been negatively affected by the negligence, malfeasance, corruption and abuse which has been allowed to go unchecked at Nassau County Jail for far too long.

We are anticipating that the Rule Committee agenda will include the re-appointment of two current members of the Board of Visitors – the entity nominally tasked with oversight of the jail, but which lacks the legal authority, competency, and will to carry out its mission. Legislator Siela Bynoe is expected to introduce legislation aimed at strengthening the Board’s oversight capabilities.

Please show up to demonstrate your support and demand respect for the dignity and humanity of those incarcerated at Nassau County Jail.
