Event held on Sunday, April 30, 2017, from 2-4 PM. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Walt Whitman Champions of Literacy Award was established to recognize the best supporters of literacy in America who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting literacy.

Dana Gioia
Poet, Writer, Advocate
Dana Gioia has enhanced the impact of literacy through his body of work. He has gone beyond his craft by attaining notable success in promoting and nurturing literacy.

The Champion That Keeps Championing
While Chair of the NEA from 2003-2009, he facilitated its recovery from big cuts made in the late 1990s. With the NEA under attack again, Gioia states that, “music, dance, theater, literature and visual arts would become less widely available, especially in schools, rural areas and poorer communities.” (LA Times)
