Come join SURJ in a door-knocking campaign to collect signatures for our petition demanding that Garden City officials investigate and respond to the racial profiling and excessive use of force against Ronald Lanier by Garden City Police. We will also be asking for donations to Ronald Lanier’s Investigative Support Fund, speaking to people about getting involved with SURJ, and offering a free Black Lives Matter yard sign to anyone who is willing to display it on their lawn.
On November 30, Ronald Lanier, a 53 year old black retired Corrections Officer, was grocery shopping at Western Beef Supermarket in Mineola when he was racially profiled and beaten while handcuffed by white Garden City Police. The shoplifting suspect whom they were pursuing was later found on the roof. Mr. Lanier was released with no apology or medical attention. The officers refused to give their names or badge numbers, and the Garden City Police Department is withholding the officers’ identities and sheltering them from accountability. Western Beef and the GCPD are also withholding surveillance footage of the incident. Mr. Lanier sustained physical and psychological wounds as a result of this racist attack, and he is currently bringing a lawsuit against Garden City. He is represented by local civil rights attorney Frederick K. Brewington.
Mr. Lanier’s family and Mr. Brewington’s office are both aware and in support of SURJ engaging in this action.
We will meet at the entrance of the park near the intersection of Colonial Ave. and Hudson Rd.
After we’re done at 4:00 PM, all participants are invited to come out for food and/or drinks so we can get to know each other in a more social setting while discussing SURJ Long Island’s organizing vision and goals.
