Long Island is on the frontline of climate change. From coastal erosion to ocean acidification and aquifer saltwater intrusion, our communities face an uncertain future without bold action to mitigate and adapt to the threat of climate change.
With Trump regressing at the federal level by gutting the Clean Power Plan and pulling out of the Paris Accord, real climate action will come from states like New York. The NYS Senate has the opportunity to step up and be a real leader in the fight against climate change by passing the Climate and Community Protection Act (S6617) this session.
The bill, which will eliminate climate pollution, protect frontline communities, and spark a revolution in good, green, union jobs passed in the Assembly in 2016 and garnered a majority of co-sponsorship in the Senate but never made it out of committee. With the bill reintroduced in both houses this year, it is time to ensure the bill is brought to a vote on the Senate floor.
